Bronze badge of St. Barbara, patron saint of gunners, masons, and many other groups. Barbara was locked in a tower by her father to preserve her virginity. While imprisoned, she became a secret Christian. Her father disapproved of this and her refusal to marry the man of his choice, so he beheaded her with a sword. He was then struck by lightning and killed.
St. Barbara is depicted here by her tower, carrying a palm branch, symbol of her martyrdom, and a miniature of her tower. Because of the small size of the badge, her traditional three windows are shown two on the large tower, and one on the model.
This badge is based on one in my collection. It is a bit bigger than the original, at 3.2cm tall. It has a sewing loop on the back to stitch to your hat or to wire to your cannon. The original is late 14th to early 15th century.
